Best Places to Celebrate Leap Day

April, June, and November
All the rest have 31,
Except for February.

That old Mother Goose rhyme doesn’t even bother to get into the semantics of a leap year, one that sees an extra day tacked onto February, rounding our calendar year up to 366 days. Because Earth takes slightly longer than 365 days to orbit the Sun (about a fourth of a day longer, in fact), leap years are necessary to sync our Gregorian calendar to that of the solar year.

February 29, leap day, comes only once every four years. That’s reason enough for Chicagoans to celebrate. Here are a few of the best ways to spend your extra day of the year.

Commonly referred to as “Sadie Hawkins Day” in the U.S., on leap day women buck tradition and ask men out for a change. Take your lucky date to Tallboy Taco in River North for $2.99 tacos in eight different varieties, including a 12-hour smoked brisket taco that practically melts in your mouth. Calories don’t count on leap day, right?

Commemorate leap day by taking a literal leap at Sky High Sports. Just 30 minutes outside of the city in Niles, Sky High Sports offers fun for the whole family with seemingly endless rows of trampolines, foam pits, and dodgeball courts. Jump time is $12 for the first hour and $8 each additional hour, but you can receive unlimited jumping for only $15 on February 29.

“Leaplings,” the lucky few born on February 29, have extra reason to celebrate a leap year. If you’re one of the 200,000 leap day babies born in the United States, head over to Hard Rock Cafe on Monday and the Near North Side mainstay will present you with a complimentary entrée off of their Leaplings Eat Free menu. Selections include a honey mustard chicken sandwich; twisted mac, chicken and cheese; and a hickory-smoked pulled pork sandwich. Treat yourself! Your birthday won’t be back for four years.

Spend leap day doing something slightly irregular and leap on down to Boystown for dinner and drinks. Dive Bar, a tropical oasis of sorts, will offer a calamari special for just $2.90 on February 29. This is in addition to their regular Monday Neighborhood Night special that grants 20% off dining for those who reside in 60657 or 60613 zip codes.

Grab a post-dinner martini across the street at Kit Kat Lounge and Supper Club. On leap day the popular party location will offer guests a private tarot card reading by psychic Therese Murphy and one martini for $29. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out your life’s path en route to leap day 2020.
